TIVO Setup Guide for PBTV (Residential Gateway)

Wiring/Hardware

Notes before Beginning:

We recommend using a set of RCA cables (the cables with the red, white, and yellow ends) to hook up the Tivo. You can use coax cable to hook up the PBTV gateway to Tivo. However, it is not recommended for reliability, signal quality and ease of hook up.

Video/Audio

  • The Tivo needs to be at the same location of both your television and gateway.
  • Hook the RCA cables from the gateway's out to the Tivo's input.
  • Hook the RCA cables from the Tivo's out to the TV.

Network

The Tivo needs some way of connecting to Tivo's network for downloading information and reporting to Tivo. A wireless network adapter and a telephone cord are provided with your TIVO. You will need to use one of them to connect the Tivo. If you do not have high speed internet you will have to use the phone cord. If you do not have a wireless router/access point, you will have to use the phone cord or purchase an ethernet adapter from Tivo.

If using the phone cord:

  • Connect the cord from the phone jack on the wall to the phone jack on the back of the Tivo.

If using the wireless adapter:

  • Connect the adapter to one of the USB ports on the back of the Tivo.

If using the ethernet adapter from Tivo:

  • Plug the ethernet adapter into one of the USB ports on the back of the Tivo and then connect an ethernet cable from the adapter to either your router or directly into the gateway's ethernet connection.

IR Cable

The Tivo Infrared Cable needs to be connected in order for the Tivo to be able to change the channels on PBTV. The Tivo can only change the channels on the TV that is set to the channel 3 video stream.

  • Plug the purple end of the IR cable into the Tivo (the jack is color coded).
  • To connect the IR cable use the adhesive strips on the two parts of the IR Cable that look like feet with the bottom of the feet pointing away from the box.

Power Cable

Plug the Tivo into the power. It doesn't technically matter when you do this, but the instructions from Tivo say to wait until last.

Software

The Software Setup is fairly straight forward, but there are a few things you will run into.

  • It will ask what kind of TV system is used, you want to select Cable with Cable Box.
  • If using the phone line select "phone line", otherwise select "network".
  • When it asks for the type of cable box, you need to select “next level”.
